Laird Technologies' Tpli Gap Fillers Used to Build Infrared Camera for NASA’s Space Shuttle

CLEVELAND – Aug. 4th, 2005 – Laird Technologies Thermal Products, a leading supplier of thermal-management solutions, today announced that its Tpli™ line of gap fillers is a critical component of an infrared camera for NASA’s Space Shuttle program. The Extravehicular Activity Infrared Camera is part of the shuttle’s fuselage re-entry inspection equipment for viewing possible damage to the shuttle’s exterior.

The camera, which is included in the equipment on the Space Shuttle Discovery, is designed to be used in an emergency by a crew member on a spacewalk outside the shuttle.

Made with a unique blend of boron nitride and silicone, Laird’s Tpli 200 family of gap fillers are the thermal-management industry’s leading thermal interface material, because they provide both high thermal conductivity and compliancy. Moreover, Tpli pads absorb mechanical shock, which minimizes potential damage to components. The Tpli line is electrically insulating, stable from -45°C to 200°C, and meets UL 94 HB rating.

“It is a high honor for Laird Technologies to provide NASA with thermal-management materials that support the Space Shuttle program,” said Michael Dreyer, vice president and general manager of Laird Technologies Thermal Products. “Our Tpli line of gap fillers provides the industry’s leading combination of thermal and mechanical properties, and, as its use on the Space Shuttle demonstrates, its flexibility for wide-ranging applications.”

As the leading manufacturer of high-performance gap filler thermal interface materials, Laird Technologies Thermal Products serves numerous markets that supply many products for OEMs, consumers and other end users. These products include notebook computers, handheld portable electronics, microprocessors, memory chips and graphic processors and automotive engine-control modules.
