A Look at Laird

With roots tracing to 1824 and Great Britain's shipbuilding industry, the modern-day Laird has a significantly different focus. Around the world, Laird enables and protects billions of electronic devices from harmful heat, disruptive electromagnetic interference, or both, as well as adding to the structural integrity of those devices. Various acquisitions of Laird Ltd., the former parent firm, and the creation over many decades of a variety of divisions increasingly pointed Laird’s leaders to the attractiveness of growing markets engaged in high-performance electronics. Trends in electronic design (more power, more heat, greater design density) bode well for solutions engineered by Laird.

A succession of acquisitions since 2000 included Emerson & Cuming, BMI, Steward, Thermagon, and several other companies. Each of these organizations focused on developing and commercializing products to enable and protect devices and thus improve their performance. They subsequently united to form Laird. A global organization, Laird continues to concentrate on developing, manufacturing, selling, and supplying precision-engineered materials used by manufacturers to serve their electronic markets. Laird's customers include most of the world’s technology leaders.

In 2018, properties of Laird were sold to the private equity firm Advent International, Inc. On July 1, 2021, global innovation leader DuPont completed its acquisition of Laird's performance materials operations while other Laird entities for a time remained as portfolio companies of Advent International.

Laird improves electronic devices by creating innovative protection solutions.  World-leading technology brands rely on Laird for improved protection, higher performance and reliability, custom structural designs, and faster time-to-market. We solve design issues through products such as EMI shielding and EMI absorbing materials, thermal interface materials, precision and structural metals, and integrated, multi-functional solutions. This latter product family resolves multiple design challenges simultaneously. Laird serves automotive, aerospace and defense, medical, computing, data infrastructure, telecom, test and measurement, wearable devices, gaming, and additional markets.

Laird’s Approach to Co-Design and Co-Engineering

What problem must the customer’s engineering team solve to create a reliable, high-performance product?

That’s the focus for Laird design engineers and field application engineers each time they create electronics-protecting solutions that suppress, shield or absorb disruptive electromagnetic interference, or transfer away unwanted heat loads.  Working in close collaboration with design engineers from the customer, Laird solves thermal and signal interference challenges in the tiniest medical device or the largest data center; the smallest wearable or an autonomous driving SUV.

Laird engineers are expert in materials sciences and electrical engineering.  Our teams have decades of experience designing solutions for the toughest heat, EMI and compliance-related problems that manufacturers face. That’s why design engineers from the world’s leading technology brands look to Laird for co-designed solutions when they need to transfer heat, lower thermal resistance, or reduce the effects of radiated energy.
