Laird Technologies’ EMI Engineers Co-Author Cover Story for IN Compliance Magazine

Subject Matter Experts Discuss Advancements in Board Level Shield Design

St. Louis, Missouri, USA – June 14, 2012 – Laird Technologies, Inc., a global leader in the design and supply of customized performance-critical components and systems for advanced electronics and wireless products, today announced that two of its subject matter experts, EMC Technical Support Engineer and NARTE Certified EMC Engineer Gary Fenical and Director of Engineering for EMI Paul Crotty, have co-authored the cover story for the June 2012 issue of IN Compliance Magazine.

The article, titled “Technology Advancements in Board Level Shields for EMI Mitigation: Not Your Daddy’s Metal Can” focuses on the developments in board level shield designs. Board level shields have gone beyond just five-sided metal boxes and now offer various designs that provide solutions for many manufacturing, performance and rework requirements. As PCB space continues to shrink and power/heat generation per unit area grows, more multi-functional BLS and thermal products will be needed. Driven by specific application needs, the BLS technology innovations now offer more choices and product features.

Gary Fenical has been with Laird Technologies for 29 years. He is a specialist in RF shielded enclosures and has been responsible for the design and/or measurement and quality control of hundreds of large-scale shielded enclosures, as well as a number of shielded equipment cabinets and housings. He was instrumental in the design and construction of Laird Technologies’ state-of-the-art World Compliance Centers and has authored many articles on EMC requirements for medical devices, mutual recognition agreements and guidelines to meet the essential requirements of the EU EMC Directive. He has also authored several seminars, presented worldwide, on the EU EMC Directive, international compliance and designing for EMC and EMC requirements for medical devices. He holds the patent for the invention of heat-treated beryllium-copper knitted wire mesh gasket.

Paul Crotty has been with Laird Technologies for 15 years. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and has previously served as an officer in the U.S. Navy. Within Laird Technologies, he has held various roles in tooling, engineering and product design and has been instrumental in establishing the global resources for Laird Technologies EMI capabilities. He holds several patents related to board level shield products with additional patents pending.
