Sir Sebastian Wood KCMG Cites Laird Among Largest UK Employers in China
November 25, 2014 – The United Kingdom’s Ambassador to China, Sir Sebastian Wood KCMG, today met with top management at global technology leader Laird (LRD: London). Ambassador Wood travelled to Laird’s high tech development and manufacturing center in Shenzhen, China to learn more about the company’s capabilities and objectives.
“UK based technology companies are driving growth and competing with the best in the world,” Sir Sebastian Wood said during his visit. He added that, “Laird is among the largest UK based employers in China and continues to develop new innovations and drive industry growth throughout the region. I am very pleased to see UK Trade and Investment supporting Laird’s exciting journey here.”
Using proprietary materials and processes, Laird’s team in Shenzhen designs and manufactures industry leading solutions which protect electronics from electromagnetic interference and heat. These products are used by global brands in the automotive, medical, telecommunications and consumer electronics industries. The Shenzhen plant is the largest of Laird’s 8 facilities in China and exemplifies the capabilities of Laird’s Chinese operations.
The company’s facility in Shenzhen opened in 2000 and employs around 2,000 people. Across Asia, Laird employs more than 7,000 people in 16 different sites including China, Vietnam, South Korea, and Malaysia. Laird’s global operations also include the design and manufacture of wireless and antenna solutions which enable connectivity for electronics and smart systems. This year alone Laird opened new plants in Shanghai China, Hanoi Vietnam, and Ohio USA, in addition to acquiring 51% of South Korean based Model Solution which specialises in rapid prototyping.
