Product Marks First Major Insulator Technology Development in 15 Years
Cleveland, OH, USA — March 1, 2006 — Laird Technologies Thermal Products (formerly known as Thermagon), a leading supplier of thermal management solutions, today introduced T-gard™ 500, a high-performance, cost-effective insulator designed specifically for automotive applications. The new flexible thermal interface material (TIM), which marks the only major insulator technology improvement in more than a decade, is ideal for overcoming problems caused by metal debris in control modules that regulate engine performance, brake systems, power steering, power windows and other electrical systems.
“This is the second offering in our family of T-gard insulators, which are designed to provide superior thermal, mechanical and electrical operation compared with other fiberglass products,” said Michael Dreyer, vice president and general manager of Laird Technologies Thermal Products. “Furthermore, this is the industry’s first significant advancement of insulator product technology in 15 years and it delivers the best performance-per-unit cost.”
Powered by integrated circuits and other intricate components that regulate these electrical systems, the control modules are housed in rectangular casting pairs that are typically made of aluminum. The molded casting pairs go through de-flashing and cleaning processes that remove most of the debris.
“The key to preventing these problems is the thickness of the TIM,” said Robert Kranz, global product manager of Laird Technologies Thermal Products. “Our new, flexible T-gard 500 is thick enough to absorb and encapsulate metal debris without losing the electrical insulation value required in the application.”
The T-gard 500 is available in a standard 0.009-inch thickness. Thicker versions are offered upon request. The T-gard 500 is priced at approximately 2 to 6 cents per square inch depending on volume.
