DaimlerChrylser qualifies ECCOSORB® GDS in Short-Range Radar System for Mercedes
A company leading the market in automotive safety is working with DaimlerChrysler and Mercedes to provide a high-end protection system to decrease the number of auto accidents.
Fundamentally new technology has been developed to compliment a current 77 GHz Brake Assist radar system used on Mercedes’ S-Class vehicles. This new technology is a short-range radar system that operates at 24 GHz and is placed within the vehicle’s bumpers. During normal operation, the radar system calculates a safe driving distance between other vehicles. However, when this distance is no longer maintained, the system automatically calculates the optimal braking power needed to prevent a possible accident. Roughly the size of a credit card, these small units required last minute EMI absorption to pass qualification testing and meet the rollout deadline.
Laird design engineers needed to find a suitable absorber for 24GHz. They selected the ECCOSORB®GDS/SS6M, which then went through rigorous automotive testing and passed. Today, custom parts cut via water-jet cutting technology are being supplied to the automotive industry.
